The ICFR Inaugural Summit

1 April 2009

The international regulatory response to the financial crisis will largely be shaped by the work of the G20. On 2nd April, the UK Government will host a summit of the G20 leaders in London that will focus on the reform of financial regulation. The ICFR conference, which is being held the day before, will provide regulated firms and other interested parties with a detailed analysis of the various regulatory proposals that the G20 is working on, and their potential impact on the financial services community.

By way of background, the International Centre for Financial Regulation (ICFR) is a research institute funded by 19 financial institutions and the City of London Corporation with the support of HM Treasury.

The initial G20 meeting in November set out common principles for the reform of financial markets. These principles have the ambitious aim of strengthening transparency and accountability, enhancing sound regulation, promoting integrity in financial markets, reinforcing international cooperation and reforming international institutions. To give them substance, a number of working groups were established, their membership drawn from experts in the G20 member states and associations.

The April G20 Leaders' Summit will consider the reports of the working groups and attempt to set out a concrete action plan.

The ICFR conference has been timed to give it maximum topicality. Not only is the programme structured around the issues which working groups set out to examine, but the speakers are also drawn from among the leading members of these groups.

Each of the conference sessions will consist of a presentation followed by a panel discussion.

If you are a senior, strategic, risk or compliance manager or an in-house counsel in a financial institution or a member of its remuneration committee; if you are a senior accountant, financial analyst, a regulator, or work in a foreign bank with offices in London or in a ratings agency; or if you are a financial journalist, regulatory lawyer or economist, then you will find attending this conference extremely useful as an insight into the G20's agenda and its impact on the future shape of the financial markets.

I look forward to seeing you there.
