Open letter from H.E. Abdel Rahman El-Khatib
Chairman of the Executive Privatisation Commission, Jordan
The Jordanian government has put investment in infrastructure and public services at the top of its agenda. We believe that partnerships between the public and the private sector are the optimum way of achieving value for money, as both knowledge and resources are pooled together. An early, and very significant, step in our adoption of PPP is the recent announcement of the tender for the US$750 million expansion of Queen Alia International Airport awarded in 2007. The Ministry of Finance and the Executive Privatisation Commission work closely with line ministries in implementing PPPs, setting the legal framework introducing international best practice and, as well as guiding individual projects.
The EPC are committed to ensuring that all projects are managed successfully from the beginning until completion. We are aware that in order to encourage domestic and international involvement in Jordan's PPP market, there are steps we need to take to attract these participants, which include contractors, facility managers, equity investors and banks. This summit provides an ideal platform for both local and regional investors to find out more about the future partnerships that will be available soon. Hence we would like to take this opportunity to present our thoughts on Jordan's future project pipeline and the involvement of potential stakeholders, alongside the presentations from our fellow countries in the MENA region.
The Jordanian Government is now planning major PPP projects across the country that will be undertaken in Transport, Health, Education, Public Housing and Government Accommodation, Tourism and Water.
We are delighted that the Second Annual PPP Middle East and North Africa Summit will be held from 22nd to 24th June 2008 in Amman.
I look forward to seeing you there.
