THE NUCLEAR ENERGY FINANCING GLOBAL SUMMIT

The Role of the Private Sector in Financing and Building Nuclear Power Plants

Bookmark page Print page Email a friend
Date: Tuesday, 27 June 2006 - Wednesday, 28 June 2006
Venue: Elysées Biarritz, Paris, France

Open Letter

Thierry Breton
Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry, France

Growing world demand for energy, coupled with dwindling supplies of fossil fuels and efforts to curb global warming, has rekindled interest in nuclear energy.

In view of the capital intensity of nuclear projects, as well as the expansion and deregulation of electricity markets and the strategic importance of energy sourcing, the nuclear sector is an ideal locus for developing partnerships between the private and public sectors. The terms and conditions of those partnerships must be carefully scrutinised to ensure that the economic risks are properly shared. In addition, the cardinal importance of nuclear safety and security makes the involvement of the public authorities all the more necessary.

This conference will be a timely contribution to the nuclear debate. It will enable exchanges of views on different national and international approaches, making it possible to create an environment that is conducive to private/public partnerships. Top-flight experts will present a wide variety of situations and analyses, thereby ensuring the appeal and success of this event.

France, which pioneered a vast nuclear electric programme, is considering the launch in the next ten years or so of a plan to renew some of its nuclear facilities. We are therefore delighted to host this high-level conference in Paris this June.
