NUCLEAR NEW BUILD: THE ROLE OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR

The 2nd Annual Global Summit - Day One

Bookmark page Print page Email a friend
Date: Tuesday, 26 June 2007 - Wednesday, 27 June 2007
Venue: Copthorne Tara Hotel, London

Nuclear energy has become an increasingly attractive option for countries across the globe as they grapple with, environmental pressures, high oil prices and concerns about security of supply. However, for many of these governments, budgetary constraints mean that it is crucial that the private sector is involved in the financing and building of next generation nuclear.  This throws up a series of questions, including how the risks should be shared between government and the private sector, where to site next generation nuclear reactors, how to dispose of nuclear waste and what the appropriate rate of return for the private sector should be at different levels of risk exposure.

This timely conference seeks to address this theme in the round.  It examines different approaches to developing a viable risk-reward environment that works both for government and the private sector, drawing on models that have been developed in various countries and bringing together many of the foremost experts in the field to discuss the key issues. We are delighted that Lord Truscott, the UK Minister of Energy, has agreed to give the keynote address.

The issues that will be discussed include:

  • Nuclear in the context of the UK’s energy needs

  • A global perspective on nuclear new build

  • Prospects for nuclear new build in the UK

  • A review of current leading edge nuclear technologies from an investment perspective

  • Progress towards establishing a long-term price for carbon: the EU ETS and other schemes

  • The outlook for electricity demand against the backdrop of climate change

  • Investment criteria for nuclear new build

  • Fundamentals of financing the construction of next generation nuclear

  • Risk mitigation and insurance

  • Nuclear energy policies and developments in Eastern Europe

  • Emerging nuclear new build markets

  • Licensing and regulation

  • Waste disposal technologies, strategies for decommissioning and their costs

  • Security and terrorism issues
