Today, the world is recognising the irrefutable role of nuclear power for the security of energy supply and combating climate change. Governments are embracing nuclear power as a fundamental component of their energy strategy in response to security of energy resources concerns, global warming and an ever-increasing demand for energy. Within the European Union, the debate about the place for nuclear energy has been very active over the last few years. The significant price increase of energy resources and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has ensured the strong presence of nuclear power and renewable energy sources in the world energy mix.
A lot of issues need adequate answers with regard to the successful development of nuclear energy. These answers can be found by the exchange of professional and expert information, often at industry events, and campaigns targeted towards the public at large. Therefore, joint efforts between scientists and experts, and politicians and investors are necessary. Partnerships between governments and the private sector need to be carefully thought through, economic risks properly shared, and safety and security issues adequately addressed. The importance of nuclear research and technology development for the next generation of nuclear reactors, and the improvement of nuclear safety come to the fore.
In that respect, forums like this one, which will take place on 17-18 November 2008 in Sofia, are very useful. This Summit, the third annual event in the series that is organised by City & Financial, will provide a timely contribution to the debate on the renaissance of nuclear power. Leading expert speakers will discuss the key issues involved in successfully developing the civil nuclear industry in Europe, from the perspectives of both government and the private sector.
Bulgaria is developing modern nuclear energy while keeping strongly in full conformity with existing nuclear safety and environmental protection standards. The new nuclear Belene project, which matches the best achievements of both western European and Russian nuclear technologies and management systems, is an example of the responsibility undertaken by the Bulgarian government.
Choosing Bulgaria to host this year's Next Generation Nuclear New Build conference is a sign of recognition for the role of our country as one of the most important energy players in South-eastern Europe. We are delighted to act as host and look forward to welcoming you in Sofia this November.
